2016 Holden Colorado: Review

Pickup trucks are not only big hit in US yet its growing popularity is also notable in Australia and Asia but new models are to be born in Europe as well. Holden is General motors’ division situated in Port Melbourne Australia and Holden Colorado is pickup truck produced by this company. It is faced with opponents like Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, etc. All Holden Colorado models are currently being made in Thailand. This version of Colorado and variant that is sold in US are essentially different but they also share a few similarities. Both models are built to satisfy particular market demands and their exteriors, interiors and even platforms are different.

However, 2016 US-spec Colorado will begin to offer 2.8 liter Duramax diesel engine while Holden’s version is already equipped with this engine. For 2016 model Holden will offer Z71 top-trim model of Colorado and this is obviously brand’s response on Ford’s Wildtrak model. 2016 Holden Colorado: Performance

Under the hood of all 2016 Holden Colorado models is the same Duramax 2 turbodiesel engine capable to hit class leading towing capacity and good payload ratings. Engine is of newer design but it doesn’t provide so modern feel and can be noisy while it is also not so responsive and doesn’t provide very sharp acceleration like some similar engines on other UTES. However, it succeeds to be competitive in terms of power and fuel efficiency but also in hauling and towing. The engine develops 197 HP (147 KW) at 3600 rpm and torque figures are at 440 Nm from 2400 rpm with manual transmission while with automatic gearbox it hits 500 Nm at same 2400 rpm. In the most of the models engine is combined with six-speed manual shifter while alternative is six-speed automatic gearbox with Active select. The model comes with either rear wheel drive or with dual-range all wheel dive. All-wheel drive is switchable and driver can transfer between two and all-four wheel dive while truck is on the move. Fuel economy depends on many factors including chosen body configuration, transmission and according to company’s tests on combined cycle it varies from around  7.9 liters per 100 km to 9.7 liters per 100 km.  Properly equipped models allow class leading 3,500 kg towing capacity.

The model is planted on a ladder frame and uses independent double wishbone with coil spring front suspension while leaf springs are used for rear setup. Rack and pinion steering system maybe needs more precision while handling doesn’t provide confidence as much we would feel in a Ranger a or Amarok models. Model isn’t also equipped with rear locking differential which is available with many rival models.
