2017 Chevy El Camino: Possible comeback, Design, Specs

Chevy has gained a strong reputation at building pickup trucks. Its full-size Silverado models and mid-sized Colorado are all successful in the US market. However, for a long time, GM has been expected to return the El Camino nameplate back to the US. This nameplate was used for the vehicle which was introduced in 1960 and discontinued for the 1987 model year. This model was actually coupe utility vehicle classified as the truck. The brand introduced this vehicle in response to the popularity of Ford’s Ranchero truck. Now, it has been suggested that brand is considering to bring back this nameplate and that as the 2017 Chevy  El Camino.

What is it?

As per some sources, the new El Camino model from Chevy, would not actually be built from the ground up. This brand actually owns a vehicle that is available in Australia under the Holden nomenclature called the Holden Ute. It is a truck that performs like a sedan because it is actually based on the Commodore sedan.  It has the demeanor of sedans including steering, ride, comfort, equipment, etc. but can also haul almost anything in its cargo bed. So, with minor modification, GM can import this great vehicle to US. However, we want to note that this is still unofficial.

2017 Chevy El Camino: Design

When it comes to the design of the 2017 Chevy El Camino, it should not be a large departure from what we can see on the current Holden Ute, at least as some reports suggest. The model will blend cues from trucks and passenger cars. It will feature low ride height and it will likely come with the two-door cabin. It should also sport Chevy’s familiar grille design with the body-colored strip which divides upper and lower portions. The grille will sit between the slender headlights and sporty shaped front bumper will also add to its appearance.

The rear side will feature upright tailgate with conventional taillights and bumper which holds dual exhaust tips. The model will ride on 16-inch wheels with low profile tires while sportier trims will come with 18- and 19-inch wheels.

Interior:

Inside, the model will feature car-like design.  The design of the interior will be similar as on other passenger oriented vehicles from this brand. Center stack will include an 8-inch screen infotainment interface and there will also attractive instrument panel. Lower spec-versions will have chipper materials and conventional seats. On the other hand, the higher-spec versions will boast sport bucket seats and leather upholstery with contrasting accents.

Available features will include almost everything that passenger-oriented cars should have. There will be automatic climate control, full power accessories, the latest MyLink infotainment system, strong sound system, modern safety features, etc.

2017 Chevy El Camino: Powertrains

As for powertrain options, we must again rely on information that comes from unofficial sources because the company has still been mum.

As per available information, the 2017 Chevy El Camino should offer two engine options. The base models should get power from the V-6 engine but its power output is still a mystery.

On the other hand, high-performance versions should come with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine with projected output of more than 400 hp. Available transmissions should include a six-speed automatic and eight-speed option.

With sedan based hardware, this utility vehicle will provide drive quality of passenger car. Car-like suspension setup, available electric steering will bring confidence and stability in turns which can’t be expected from work-oriented trucks.

2017 Chevy El Camino: Price, Arrival

As it is with other exposed information, details about price and possible release date are also unofficial. Based on some reports, the 2017 Chevy El Camino should come to the US during 2017. The starting price should take the position in mid-20,000.
