2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD: News, Design, Platform, Release

Chevy pulled recently the wraps off the redesigned Silverado 2500 and 3500 and showed how the new models look in several trim versions. However, Chevy remained tight-lipped about the specs and equipment the new models will offer while said the new V-8 engine and transmission system will go on sale with the new generation Silverado HD. The turbodiesel will likely stay in the current form. On the other hand, the mechanical twin of the Silverado HD, the GMC Sierra HD models still remain under the wraps but the less camouflaged prototype was caught again on the road.

The new 2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD should debut in the first moths of the next year and closer to the premier more details will emerge. We know so far, that the new Sierra HD will get the new base V-8 engine while the Duramax turbodiesel will keep the current ratings. The new 10-speed automatic transmission, like in the new Silverado, will also be in the equipment list. The redesigned trucks will also adopt similar exterior styling as the earlier redesigned, light-duty version. The model will also be equipped with the latest tech and safety features.

2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD: Design

The latest prototype version of the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD spotted on road looks like the top-tier Denali version of the ¾-ton model. The new version has the revamped grille version with the more dynamic contours like the smaller Sierra 1500 and the design of the headlights is also similar to that of the light-duty truck. The C-speed pattern of the signature lighting is clearly visible under the camo and the model seems to have a more rugged hood design. The truck has also the new front bumper which seems also slightly different than on the smaller cousin.

The new heavy-duty trucks will also introduce the bed steps on the flanks the new feature we already saw on the recently revealed Chevy Silverado HD. GMC should also equip the MultiPro tailgate with six functions and positions in some versions. The carbon fiber cargo bed should also migrate to the HD model from the light-duty truck.

With the refreshed visual identity, the new GMC Sierra HD will also switch to the revamped platform. The T1XX body-on-frame architecture is the improved design of the K2XX platform which forms the base of the current version. GM uses also this platform for its other full-size SUVs and trucks. The multi-material design of the platform should provide improved structural rigidity and reduce the weight of the models at around 300 pounds.

Interior, Equipment:

Inside the cabin, the new Sierra HD should apply the similar recipe as the smaller truck in the lineup and that is also familiar form from the light-duty Silverado. The more premium Sierra will add special trim elements and unique textures like the genuine wood and contrasting stitching to distinguish it from the corporate cousin.

The model will, however, share the same safety and tech features. The new heavy-duty Sierra will add the advanced safety systems unavailable in the current version. The truck should gain the surround view cameras, blind-spot monitors, forward collision warning, etc. The newest infotainment system with the 8-inch touchscreen, navigation and smartphone support will also be available. The truck will also offer a number of high-luxury features like the heated and cooled seats, perforated leather upholstery, premium sound system, and more.

2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD: Powertrains

The new 2020 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD will share the same mechanics with the recently revealed Chevy Silverado HD.

The trucks will come with the new V-8 gasoline engine but GM hasn’t disclosed the specs of the new power unit. The new engine will employ the direct injection and six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine will return with 445 horsepower and torque of 910 pound-feet but paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission.

The new Sierra HD could also get the off-ready AT4 version like smaller, Sierra 1500. It remains to be seen what towing levels the new trucks will reach with the improved structure and performance of the new engine.
