2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X: News, Equipment, Price

Nissan is working on the next generation Frontier but the new model is still more than a year from the launch as the latest reports suggest. The third generation Nissan Frontier should hit the roads in September 2020 as the 2021 model.

The current Frontier is the design from the previous decade while the chassis and the base powertrain are from the mid-2000s. The Frontier is now faced with the reintroduced Ford Ranger and new Jeep Gladiator while the class leader is a recently refreshed Toyota Tacoma. Other rivals include Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline. Strangely, the Frontier rates better on the sales chart than the GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline for the 2018 model year. The same is for the first quarter of this year.

As for the 2020 Frontier version, the changes will be minimal. The model will return with the same powertrains and trims order. Among the available options, the all-rounder 2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X will again be one of the best choices. The model will come with the enhanced suspension, off-road tires, locking differential and unique exterior and interior elements. The PRO-4X will also provide a dose of luxury with the available Luxury Package.

2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X: Capability

The 2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X will return with the same engine under the hood and with the same off-road enhancements.

The model will skip the base four-cylinder engine and equip a 4.0-liter V-6 unit combined with either six-speed manual transmission or the 5-speed automatic. The engine will provide 261 hp and maximum torque of 284 pound-feet. The fuel economy should be around 19 mpg combined.

The Frontier PRO-4x will employ a part-time, four-wheel drive by default. The system comes with a low-speed transfer case and locking rear differential. Important for the off-road duties will also be all-terrain-capable tires and skid plates. The PRO-4X trim will also provide special Bilstein shocks absorbers.

The third-generation Frontier should, however, introduce a new engine in the place of the 4.0-liter V-6 unit. The reports claim that a 3.0-liter V-6 unit capable of producing around 300 hp could be the engine of choice. Nissan will likely combine the new engine with the 7-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel unit was also mentioned in some reports and it could be a 2.8-liter unit form the Duramax family of engines.

2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X: Design

The 2020 Fournier will keep model’s retro exterior look and the 2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X will also stay the familiar form.

The Frontier will return with the old-design V-motion grille and large headlights. The body sculpting will also remain the same. The PRO-4X will get unique 16-inch wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires. The model will also include fog lights, tailgate spoiler, splash guards and appropriate badging and stickers to signal its purpose.

Interior, Equipment:

The Frontier will stay the same design inside the cabin for the 2020 model year while the third-generation version should lift the level of sophistication and equipment in order to stay relevant in the class.

The Pro-4X version will come in extended and crew cab body shapes. The model will include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, special upholstery, Rockford Fosgate sound system, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, heated front row, dual-zone climate control, etc. The part of the deal will also be Nissan Connect infotainment system with a 5.8-inch display, navigation, smartphone compatibility, voice commands and satellite radio.

Buyers will be able to upgrade further with the Luxury Package available on the Crew Cab version. With this package comes leather upholstery, a sunroof, roof rack, power front seats, heated mirrors, etc.

The model will again skip advanced safety systems that proliferate in the new models. Systems like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking or blind spot detection won’t be available but should appear with the new generation version.

2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X: Release, Price

The 2020 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X and other versions should appear by the end of the year. The prototype of the third generation Frontier should also emerge on the roads in the coming months and give us better insight into what to expect from the redesigned version.

The price of the next Frontier could be slightly lower than now. However, the off-road ready PRO-4X will again demand more than $30, 000.
