2021 Isuzu D-Max: Changes, Specs, Price

Isuzu Motors already showed the all-new, third-generation D-Max pickup truck in Thailand last October but the redesigned truck goes on sale in some markets as the 2021 version. The new-generation D-Max ended the ties with the global Ford Ranger model and it shares the components with the new Mazda BT-50. The 2021 Isuzu D-Max comes on the heavily upgraded and lighter chassis but it gets also improved suspension, powertrain and off-road capability. 

Under the hood of the new model is a more potent 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine and the new D-Max receives also a differential lock for better off-road prowess.

The new truck is also more sophisticated than ever and comes with the upgraded trims and in-cab materials. The model goes also on sale with modern safety tech.

The newest Isuzu D-Max is also larger in every dimension and comes again in three cab styles and various trim options.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Design

The redesigned 2021 Isuzu D-Max and its new twin model Mazda BT-50 sit on the heavily upgraded Isuzu’s Dynamic Drive Platform. The reworked platform uses more high-tensile steel and aluminum alloy and as a result, it is about 80 kg lighter and 20 more rigid than before.

The new Isuzu D-max is also larger in every dimension. The model returns in three cab configurations. The Isuzu D-Max Single Cab measures 205.9 inches from bumper to bumper. With the four, full-size doors, the model is up to 208.1 inches long. The wheelbase of the third-generation D-Max is 123.0 inches in comparison to the 121.9-inch wheelbase of the previous-generation model.

The upcoming Isuzu D-Max comes also with a more modern and rugged visual identity. Isuzu’s designers reworked all body panels. The model wears a new, larger grille flanked by modern headlights with attractive U-shaped LED signature lights. The new truck has also new bumpers and wheel styles.

Creases on the hood and sculpted character line and fender flares add also to the model’s visual interest. The tailgate had a conventional style mixed with the two-layer taillights.

Interior, Equipment:

The new 2021 Isuzu D-Max comes also with upgraded in-cab sophistication and comfort.

The model has a new dash design with a hexagonal center stack and redesigned instrument cluster. There is also a multi-functional steering wheel with the reach adjustments. The seats have also an improved ergonomics and comfort. The material quality is also a level-up.

The new D-Max employs an upgraded infotainment system available with a large 9-inch touchscreen. The system supports voice recognition and Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionality. The model can also be had with the leather upholstery, UV-protection windshield, dual-zone climate control, 8-speaker sound system, digital instrument cluster and more.

The third-generation D-Max doesn’t lack modern safety systems either. The model adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist, and automatic emergency braking that could be available in Australia.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Performance

On the performance front, the new 2021 Isuzu D-Max benefits from the upgraded chassis and suspension. The new model adds also an electromagnetic rear locking differential to improve its off-road credentials. Revisions applied to the front and rear suspension should also provide a more composed ride. The model uses new throw arms with the double-wishbone front-end suspension setup and new leaf springs made by using new technologies that should improve strength and comfort.  

The new D-Max changes also dimensionally and it has increased ground clearance and wading depth. The new version has 240 mm of ground clearance and can wade 800mm deep water.

Under the hood of the Isuzu D-Max is an upgraded 3.0-liter turbo-4 diesel-sipping unit. The engine is now good for 188 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque (140 kW/450 Nm).  The upgraded engine version achieves peak torque from 1600-2600 rpm. Maximum power is again available at 3600 rpm. Buyers will choose between a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions. Isuzu will also offer a 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine good for 148 hp and 350 Nm of torque in some markets.

The redesigned Isuzu D-Max comes with a deeper cargo bed where it can load 1 ton of cargo. The towing capability stays at 3500 kg.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Availability, Price

The new-generation 2021 Isuzu D-Max will enter showrooms this fall. The price should be increased slightly across the trim range. The current Australia-spec model starts from $28, 600.
