One of the most recognizable names in the automobile industry returns for the 2022 model year but this time General Motors will use it as the nameplate under the GMC sub-brand and lunch the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck. GM discontinued the Hummer division in 2009 but the Hummer-badged trucks and SUVs returns under the GMC sub-brand. The first examples will be available in fall 2021 and that in the form of the full-size, full-electric pickup truck. The model will initially be available in only one version the Hummer Edition EV 1 while additional three variants will be launched for the next three successive model years.
The upcoming Edition EV 1 version will be the most expensive while the cheapest one will hit the market for the 2024 season. The new Hummer will employ a three-motor setup fed with the massive battery pack and producing around 1000 hp. It should deliver around 350 miles of range and be ready for serious off-roading.
The new Hummer EV will also get attention with its sleek and modern appearance and it will also go on sale loaded with modern tech features.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Design
The all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV comes based on GM’s new BT1 platform. The GM BT1 architecture is a version of the T1 body-on-frame platform designed to accommodate the battery-fed powertrains. The platform allows various battery-electric setups and truck and SUV-like body configurations.
From the visual perspective, the new Hummer EV truck stays loyal to the Hummer’s heritage by mixing familiar styling cues with modern design trends. The truck has a blocky silhouette adorned with stylish and modern elements.
The front section of the model includes modern headlights with H-shaped elements and a full-width LED bar with Hummer stamping. Seven vertical grille slats divide each leather. The model’s front-end bears also the off-road-style bumper with a massive front skid plate signaling the truck’s purpose.
The truck has also sculpted hood and squared-off fenders. Wide fender flares provide plenty of clearance for massive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud tires. Available will be larger 37-inch tires.
The rear of the truck accommodates a small cargo bed. The truck uses also GMC’s MultiPro tailgate and comes with a removable top.
The Hummer EV measures 216.8 inches in length and 86.7 inches in width. The model rides on a 135.6-inch wheelbase.
Interior, Equipment:
The cabin of the upcoming 2022 GMC hummer EV combines functionality and practicality with modern tech features. The truck has a shelf-like dash with a large center display and two rows of physical controls underneath. In front of the three-spoke, multi-functional steering wheel is a large digital instrument display.
The Hummer EV debuted with a combination of white and black upholstery adorned with bronze accents. The model will go on sale with a massive 13.4-inch center infotainment display and there will also be a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The truck will also employ various modern tech systems including the Super Cruise self-driving system that allows driver-free driving on the specific roadways. There will also be numerous EV-related systems.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Powertrain
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV comes in the only one version employing the three-motor setup. The Edition 1 version that goes on sale for the 2022 model year is the range-topping variant with an output of around 1000 hp. One of three electric motors is responsible for the front wheels while the other two powering the rear wheels. GMC mentioned the model’s 11, 500 lb-ft of torque but that should represent the torque at the spot where the tire touches the road which is much higher than the actual torque of the powertrain. It is expected that the actual torque should be around 800 lb-ft.
The truck’s electric system will include a 200 kWh battery pack that should provide a range of up to 350 miles. It will be able to use 800-volt fast-charge architecture that should add up to 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.
The truck also employs an air suspension that can raise for 6 inches. The model will also use four-wheel steering with the crab mode.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Release, Price
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV will hit the market in fall 2021. For the first model year, it will only be available in the Edition 1 version prized from $112, 595. The EV3X version will follow in fall 2022 with the $99, 995 price tag. The $89,995 EV2X will arrive in spring 2023 while the fourth $79,995 two-motor EV2 variant will go on sale in spring 2024.
