It seems that we can’t catch a break from new trucks, get ready for the 2023 Chevy Silverado SS. Silverado is a household name and is always a top seller on the market. The mid-size segment is quite saturated and has a lot of competition. In order to come out on top, Chevy has to pull all the stops and make the Silverado really stand out. Well, one way to do it is to give it a SS badge. This stands for Super Sport which is usually given to muscle cars under the Chevy flag. No one knows exactly how an SS badge would work on a mid-size truck.
But we assume it will have to do with a stronger powertrain. Perhaps better performance in terms of speed and handling. It should also affect the interior of the new Silverado. Making it more sporty and luxurious is the goal. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise if Chevy made the Silverado SS an electric pickup. They are quite popular and with good reason. So far not too much is known about the upcoming redesign. Let’s read in more detail what we do know about it.
What Will 2023 Chevy Silverado SS Look Like?
The refreshed 2023 Chevy Silverado SS is looking aggressive and fast. Designers did a great job at making it worthy of the SS badge. It looks like a weird mix of a street racer and a workhorse pickup. And it looks amazing. The front fascia is refreshed with a big mesh with a lot of air intake. Big engine requires a lot of cooling power to keep it running properly. The ride height is lower than usual since most sports cars look like that. The headlight design is the same as on every other Silverado. Big 18-inch wheels are made with aluminum to shave off some weight. This improves power to weight ratio which is excellent, especially if you want to be drag racing.
Expect a complete do-over on the inside of the 2023 Chevy Silverado SS. Seating is getting improved on many levels. This means better upholstery with contrast stitching for some style points. Multiple color choices for leather. Heated and ventilated seats are confirmed but we are waiting on a massage feature. There will be a central infotainment unit, no less than 13 inches.
This truck can seat five people comfortably so a big screen is needed for everyone to be able to join in on the fun. Heads up display is also present as well as a digital dashboard. This enables better and easier tracking of information. It will be interesting to see what safety features come with the new Silverado SS. But we are waiting for the hands-free driving feature. SuperCruise covers over 200,000 miles of pre-mapped interstate roads in the US. This makes a lot of hype recently and is a useful tool in every vehicle.
Under the Hood
Although this redesign started a lot of rumors and bickering, it might turn out to be much ado about nothing. The upcoming 2023 Chevy Silverado SS will focus more on the street racing portion of the industry. There are many desert running and mountain climbing trucks in this segment. But Chevy decided that the Silverado SS will go a different route. Under the hood, we get reliable and proven options. We have a 6.2 liter V8 that can produce 420 horsepower. This is a lot of power for a truck of this size. And the SS version might get an overhauled version of the engine. This means more power and more torque.
There is no mention of the diesel variant for the new Silverado. But there are rumors spurring about a hybrid powertrain for the SS Silverado. Using a couple of electric motors for an improved powertrain would reap amazing benefits. First of all this type of setup gives more horsepower and more torque. On top of that, we get better fuel economy and the engine will last longer since it is under less stress. If you ever run out of fuel the electric motors can run for 40 miles on their own. And don’t forget, these modern electric motors have self-recharging capabilities by braking and other processes in the truck.
Pros and Cons
Of course, going fully electric is the powerplay here. Putting a battery pack with 150 kWh should suffice. This would give at least 300 miles of range on a single charge. Not to mention the horsepower and torque the truck would have. This is all coupled with the fact that you will be doing your part in saving the environment. Also, gas prices are getting higher as you read this. So saving money on gas also helps the prospect of electric Silverado. Some companies even include 2-year free charging for their electric trucks. So that’s another idea to think about. Whether Chevy rolls out the Silverado SS with the battery pack or not, remains to be seen. But it is quite popular now to go electric. Many companies vowed to have fully green fleets by 2030. This is coincidentally the year new emission and pollution laws come into play.
The new 2023 Chevy Silverado SS isn’t very cheap when it comes to gas. The big V8 is thirsty and you can count on getting around 13mpg combined. Around 12 mpg in the city and 15 on the highway. We already mentioned the benefits of introducing a hybrid powertrain, and better mileage is a very important benefit here.
When Will 2023 Chevy Silverado SS Be Available?
No official date is given as of yet. But the earliest we can hope is summer 2023. The starting price for the new 2023 Chevy Silverado SS is around $70,000. The competition in this segment is fierce so we will have to wait and see how this battle turns out. Also, GM could start producing another interesting concept – Reaper truck.
