2023 GMC Canyon Diesel Duramax Review

We are getting a new redesign, it is the brand new 2023 GMC Canyon Diesel. It has been almost a decade since the Canyon was restyled. This is too long in the automotive industry. Some trucks are getting mid-cycle refreshers almost every year. And some like to wait a while to make it count. Hopefully, Canyon is one of those who will make the wait worthwhile. This pickup was well known for its sturdy and reliable platform, great powertrain and somewhat lackluster interior. Perhaps they are taking a cue from other manufacturers and GMC invests a bit of time and money into the cabin.

This would definitely give the pickup an edge over its competition. Trucks aren’t simple workhorses anymore and people use them for their everyday agenda. This means that a stylish and well-designed interior is needed for an all-around good pickup. On the exterior, we are not expecting too many changes. The Canyon should still resemble its predecessors and have an aggressive and mean look. Under the hood is where we might get some surprises. Electric powertrains are all the hype and it wouldn’t surprise us if the new GMC Canyon arrives with one. Let’s read in better detail what is coming with the redesign.

Canyon Engines

There is a certain veil of mystery surrounding the 2023 GMC Canyon Diesel. The manufacturer is still mum on the official powertrain lineup. But there are certain engines that spring to mind when talking about the new Canyon. First up we have the Chevy turbocharged 2.7-liter engine, which can be the new powerplant for the returning Avalanche truck. This is paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. It can produce 310 horsepower. This is more than enough to make the big Canyon go wild. The AT4X trim will be equipped with a more powerful version of the engine that has 410 pound-feet of torque. This will come in handy off the road, which AT4X is specifically designed for. There is also a 3.6-liter gasoline engine. Also paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission. This has a much better output than the 2.7-liter counterpart.

But at the cost of more fuel expenditure. And last but not least, we have a diesel option. It is a 2.8-liter diesel Duramax engine. It has 181 horsepower but 370 pound-feet of torque. So far there aren’t any official hybrid or electric variants. This does come as a surprise since these are quite popular. On top of that, they have obvious and proven benefits for the truck itself. Introducing a dual electric motor setup would increase horsepower and decrease fuel consumption. If you run out of fuel, these motors can give you at least 40 miles of extra coverage. Full electrification isn’t likely for the new 2023 GMC Canyon Diesel.

But it is quite possible to make one and it would be good on paper. Putting a battery pack of at least 150 kWh would give more than 300 miles of range. On top of that the horsepower would be through the roof. Add the prospect of saving the environment and saving some money on gas. And you have yourself a winner in the category. Currently, Canyon can tow from 5500 pounds to 7000 pounds depending on the trim you choose. Elevation trim is the strongest one.

The fresh 2023 GMC Canyon Diesel isn’t the thirstiest on the market. In the city, it gets around 20 mpg while on the highway it goes up to 30. As we already mentioned, using a hybrid or electric powertrain would make this number go up multiple times.
