A fast-growing compact pickup truck class offers many refreshed or redesigned models but many are also to come to the party. With recently redesigned class leader the Toyota Hilux and contenders like the Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, Nissan Navara, promised Mercedes-Benz pickup, etc. Mitsubishi had to upgrade its L200 model and it did the job well for 2016 model year.

With around 330 changes including upgraded underpinning, new turbo diesel engine, refreshed styling and interior, the fifth generation L200 has been ready for the battle. Mitsubishi L200 also borrowed its proven underpinning to the new Fiat Fullback and that also speaks to its credibility. On the other hand, the model will soon enter to its third model year since the redesign but 2018 Mitsubishi L200 isn’t expected to come with big changes.

With many redesigned and refreshed pickups in compact truck class Mitsubishi had to offer seriously reworked L200 model in order to stay close with main rivals like VW Amarok and Ford Ranger. The result is the fifth generation Mitsubishi L200 which has been on sale as 2016 model. That brings the new 2017 Mitsubishi L200 on market only a year after this redesign and it will not have much new to offer.

What is better?

The arrival of the current generation L200 has made this model much refined and all aspects has experienced important improvements. The most important upgrade was new turbo diesel engine which is more efficient and lighter. The underpinning hasn’t changed but styling and interior have been reworked and upgraded. The L200 is also well-equipped with technology and safety features and available in many different configurations. The rebadged version of the L200 with the same platform and distinctive styling features will be sold as the Fiat Fullback.

For years, pickup trucks have been very popular and lucrative product in US but growing popularity has also been recognized in other markets outside this country. In the US the largest part of sales comes from the full-size versions but since the return of the Chevy Colorado and closely related GMC Canyon, the mid-size class has started to regain its popularity. On the other hand some research has been done which suggests that there is the large population of the potential buyers which would like more compact pickup truck version.

The more compact model should bring more manageable size for crowded urban areas and parking and will be more fuel-efficient and cheaper than full-size versions but will also be capable to offer larger cargo capabilities than SUVs. In that context many brands have been rumored to be considering new compact pickup versions. Among them, Chevy has been reported to be considering the return of El Camino nameplate in from of the Chevy El Camino Concept pickup truck model. This name was used for coupe utility/pickup vehicle that Chevrolet produced in 60s and until 1987. Now, Chevrolet is rumored to be bringing a new modern interpretation of the compact pickup truck which will feature the best attributes of its trucks and crossovers.

The popularity of full-size pickup trucks in the US is enormous but many brands have recognized that demand for more compact models is growing. After some mid-size versions returned and they have gained great popularity, more brands considering their small-truck offerings. The main reasons why buyers want downsized truck versions than full-size models are better fuel economy and more maneuverable size for urban ride. Ford is also considering returning small-truck in the US ever since it discontinued Ford Ranger in this market.

However, according to some sources, Ford doesn’t think to return Ranger in US because this model is very close in size as the top-selling F-150, yet it want to design more compact version. So, rumor has that Ford has in mind new Ford Ranchero Concept model which would actually be close in size as this name model that was produced in 60s and 70s. This model was adapted on the station wagon platform and included two-door cab and cargo bed. However, new concept model from the Ford Company is rumored to take new modern approach when it comes to the design, platform and others.
