2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Expectations, Redesign, Price

In the last few model years, the mid-size trucks have regained their glory. With constantly upgraded GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma, the buyers have a good alternative to full-size models. But is there a room for the Nissan Frontier? This model was redesigned for the last time in 2005 and its new generation has been a long awaited. But, obviously, the Nissan has focused on offering the new Titan XD and redesigned Titan in the last years. So, it is now expected that Frontier will get brand’s attention and we expect it to come as the redesigned 2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel.

What should be new?

Well, the official information about new-generation Frontier hasn’t been available yet. Many sources suggest new-generation of this model and improvements on all fronts. The model should get refreshed styling and interior, structural improvements and upgraded technology as well. Nissan might also offer a diesel engine option.

2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Design, Changes

Well, it hasn’t yet been clear what form of the design would the new 2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel get. It has been believed that globally available Navara will give some inspiration for the US-spec Frontier. If it turns out to be true, the new Frontier will look sleeker and more modern.

The model should exhibit a new sleeker interpretation of the V-motion grille. It will sit between new headlights adorned with LED DRLs. Bellow will be reworked front bumper with new fog lights. The model will also feature swollen fenders and sculpted door panels.

The tailgate should get modest changes including refreshed taillights and rear bumper.

The new Frontier is also expected to bring some structural improvements. Improved chassis’ rigidity, some weight reduction and revised suspension will improve its performance and efficiency.

Interior, features:

Inside, the model should get significant improvements in comfort, ergonomics and technology. The hard-plastic surfaces should be replaced with soft-touch materials and new textures. Redesigned dash will host modernized center stack and new instrument cluster. Comfortable front bucket seats will provide long ride comfort and good driving position will ensure good visibility.

Tech-wise, the Frontier will get the latest infotainment interface. It will also offer smartphone compatibility, navigation, satellite and HD radio, strong sound system, etc. The model should also gain new advanced safety systems that have already been common in the pickup industry.

On the other hand, the model will also offer features like automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, different interior and exterior themes, etc.

It should again be available in extended and crew cab styles and with two bed lengths. There will also be the off-road PRO-4X version which adds additional off-road hardware.

2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Powertrains

In the engine department, the new 2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel will focus to deliver improved performance and fuel efficiency. But, it is still a mystery what power options this model will offer.  However, some sources even suggest a diesel-powered version. The Navara already offers four-cylinder turbodiesel but we don’t expect this engine stateside. The more likely option is diesel engine from the Cummins family like in Frontier’s 2014 concept model. However, Nissan will say the final word about diesel engine option.

On the other hand, it isn’t also clear what petrol engine options would this model employ. It is likely to again offer four-cylinder and V-6 options. In the current form, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 152 hp and torque of 171 pound-feet. But the 4.0-liter V-6 has much better pulling capability and it can provide 261 hp and peak torque of 281 lb-ft.

The new Frontier should also get upgraded suspension and steering system as well as a new transmission system. There would likely be a new 7-speed automatic gearbox. Of course, there will be rear- and all-wheel drive options.

2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel: Arrival, Price

The new 2018 Nissan Frontier Diesel should arrive sometime in the second half of 2017. The price range should start from around $20, 000.

  1. Diesel models will not sell well in North America
4 cyl Diesels are not up to speed for this market
I expect to see a slick v6 as the top model with 300 hp and same in Torque , an I4 cyl for the base model. They may offer a diesel but it won’t sell well.
