2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: News, Design, Specs, Price

The growing mid-size pickup market in the US welcomed recently the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator but the return of the new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon in 2015 marked the revival of the mid-sized trucks. Chevy’s mid-size model received multiple upgrades during the life cycle including the 2.8L turbodiesel engine, new transmission and infotainment system, the off-road ready ZR2 version but also the hardcore ZR2 Bison version which specialized rock crawling, desert running, water crossing, etc. American Expedition Vehicles upgraded the Colorado with the unique styling, beefed-up suspension, locking differentials, beefy tiers and more.

As for the 2020 version, the Colorado could gain some visual upgrades with the possibility of the turbocharged engine option to appear.  Chevy hasn’t yet revealed the details about the next Colorado but the sources claim the styling updates inspired by the design cues from the ZR2 Bison. On the other hand, the 2020 Chevy Colorado Bison ZR2 will continue to the new model year with no visual upgrades but could offer the turbocharged powertrain option. Expect the same off-road hardware but the addition of the new color combinations and several new features as well.

2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: Performance

To go on the terrains where other truck can’t go, the Colorado ZR2 Bison equips the long list of upgrades. Like the current version, the 2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison uses the upgraded, off-road chassis underpinned with the improved suspension with the Multimatic DSSV shocks. Going on the harsh terrains is also possible thanks to the front and rear locking differentials and 2.0-inch suspension lift. The model boosts also the off-road performance with the Autotrac transfer case and improved rear axle. The knobby, all-terrain tires also provide improved traction while Boron steel skidplates, recovery points and winch mount are important parts of the system as well.

As for the power delivery, the next Colorado ZR2 Bison should rely on two familiar engine options already used in the current version but the turbocharged unit could also jump into the play as some reports claim. A 3.6-liter V-6 which makes 308 hp and torque of 275 lb-ft combined with the 8-speed automatic transmission should remain the option. A 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel provides 181 hp and torque of 369 lb-ft with the 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Chevy might, however, introduce a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which could even replace the V-6 unit as some sources suggest. The unit makes 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque in the light-duty Silverado and would be a great improvement for the mid-size Colorado.

2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: Design

From the visual perspective, the ZR2 Bison is unique design compared to the other versions and the 2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison won’t come with the notable styling changes while some styling tweaks should appear in other trims.

The ZR2 Bison has a stronger presence than more civilized Colorado versions thanks to the off-road upgrades and other purposed styling tweaks. The hardcore, off-roader has a unique, black grille with CHEVROLET lettering which in similar form could appear on more Colorado versions. The sculpted hood and wider fender flares form also more rugged appearance.

The truck uses also special bumpers with tubular steel protection. The front bumper has a winch mount while the rear comes with the recovery points. Important for the performance are also 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires wrapped around the AEV 17-inch aluminum wheels. The truck offers also the snorkel addition and has AEV Bison badges.

Chevy will offer the Bison model in extended and crew cab style with the short and long cargo beds.

Inside the cabin, the ZR2 Bison will install the modern infotainment system with the 8-inch touchscreen and Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility. The truck will also include the WiFi hotspot and wireless charging. The unique upholstery and details will also define the capable Colorado Bison.
